Catarina Mina Is Bringing the Craft Traditions of Northeast Brasil Into Contemporary Fashion

From intricate lacework to the symbolism of rain in the Brazilian sertão, the Ceará-based label is building a distinctive fashion language around craftsmanship, cultural memory and the women who keep these traditions alive.

Brazilian fashion has long been associated with exuberant colour, sensuality and an unmistakable ease. Yet some of its most compelling stories are unfolding far from those familiar codes, in workshops where techniques handed down through generations are finding new relevance.

Catarina Mina belongs to this conversation.

Founded by designer Celina Hissa in Ceará, Northeast Brasil, the label has developed a distinctive approach to contemporary fashion, placing traditional craftsmanship at the heart of its creative process.

Crochet, embroidery and lace are not simply finishing touches. They inform the way a garment is conceived, constructed and ultimately worn. Equally important are the artisans whose expertise gives each piece its character.

A Fashion Language Rooted in Place

Ceará is home to a rich textile heritage, shaped by generations of women who have preserved intricate techniques through their work.

Catarina Mina draws on this legacy without treating it as something fixed in the past. Instead, the label explores how traditional skills can find a place in a contemporary wardrobe, allowing familiar materials and methods to take on unexpected forms.

The result is fashion with a strong sense of origin, but without the nostalgia that can sometimes accompany heritage-led design.

The Poetry of Rain

The label’s latest collection, Bonito Pra Chover, takes its name and inspiration from the anticipation of rain in the sertão, the semi-arid interior of Northeast Brasil.

Here, rain carries a particular emotional weight. Its arrival signals renewal, possibility and the transformation of a landscape accustomed to long periods of drought.

Rather than interpreting this imagery literally, the collection translates it into texture, movement and form. Crochet introduces a sense of fluidity, while embroidery, lace and layered fabrics create surfaces that suggest the shifting rhythms of the natural world.

Among its most significant elements is renda de tramoia, a traditional lace-making technique associated with Curral Velho, a coastal community in Itarema, Ceará. With the technique at risk of disappearing, its inclusion draws attention to the artisans who continue to practise it.

The use of textile remnants in patchwork pieces adds another dimension to the collection.

Bonito Pra Chover is part of the São Paulo Fashion Week calendar in October 2026.

Why Catarina Mina Deserves International Attention

As the global fashion industry reassesses the value of craftsmanship, provenance and cultural identity, Catarina Mina offers a perspective shaped by its own geography and traditions.

Its appeal lies not in reproducing an established idea of Brazilian fashion, but in expanding it. The label’s work speaks to a more nuanced understanding of luxury, one in which time, skill and human knowledge matter as much as the finished object.

For an international audience looking beyond fashion’s familiar capitals, that is precisely what makes the label worth watching.
